What are the ballast water management standards? There are two ballast water management standards (D-1 and D-2). The D-1 standard requires ships to exchange their ballast water in open seas, away from coastal areas. Ideally, this means at least 200 nautical miles from land and in water at least 200 metres deep.

The D-1 standard covers ballast water exchange while the D-2 standard covers ballast water treatment. The convention requires either D-1 or D-2 standard after entry into force. There will be a transitional period from the entry into force to the first IOPP renewal survey* after 8 September 2019 in which ballast water exchange (reg. D-1) can be employed.

For renewal and random inspections, maintaining the ballast water system operating requirements in line with the IMO Ballast Water Convention (2004) will be required.
