A 'type' or category of information system is simply a concept, an abstraction, which has been created as a way to simplify a complex problem through identifying areas of commonality between different things.

There are various types of information systems, for example: transaction processing systems, decision support systems, knowledge management systems, learning management systems, database management systems, and office information systems.

The following are the six most common types of information systems and functions: Transaction Processing Systems (TPS) serve the people in the operational level of an organization. It collects and stores information about transactions, and controls some aspects of transactions. A sale of item in the store is an example of a transaction.
