Trap Rock Ridges

Traprock (or basalt) mountains, ridges, (or just traps) are elevated landscape features made of trap rock, most often basalt. Basalt, due to its high quantity of iron, is a characteristically dark-colored rock that weathers to shades of red and purplish-red when exposed to the air.

BERLIN - The Berlin Historical Society will host author, educator and environmental scientist Peter LeTourneau for a talk on the traprock ridges of Berlin and the surrounding Connecticut Valley. The lecture, “No Place Like Home: The World-Class Landscapes and Environmental History of the Berlin Region,” is set for Tuesday, June 19 at 6:30 p.m. at the Berlin-Peck Memorial Library.

The ridge is an important recreation resource located within 10 miles (16 km) of more than 1.5 million people, offering four long-distance hiking trails and over a dozen parks and recreation areas, including several historic sites.

The Gogebic and Trap Ranges form two prominent ridges in Iron and Ashland Counties in northern Wisconsin. Both ridges are composed of rock types that are more resistant to erosion than the rock that underlies the valley separating the ridges. Recent glacial deposits cover the valley and parts of the ridges.
